Washer Error Code Lookup

Pick the brand, type the code on the display, and see what it means and what the maker’s support pages say to do. Samsung and LG washers for now, with dishwashers next.

Common codes

O and 0, and S and 5, look alike on a display; the lookup tries both.

The short answer

An error code is the washer telling you what stopped it, and the same letters can mean different things on different brands: OE is too much water on a Samsung but a drain problem on an LG. So start with the brand. Most codes come down to the load, a hose, the drain filter, the detergent or the door, and the makers’ fixes take a few minutes. If a code keeps coming back after the fix, both makers say the washer needs service.

Codes that aren’t faults

  • Ur (Samsung): the washer is rebalancing the load and will try the spin again.
  • Cb or C6 (Samsung): calibration mode. dn: downloading an update.
  • CL: Child Lock is on (LG), or Child Lock drained the tub (Samsung).
  • tCL (LG): time to run Tub Clean. Cd (LG washer-dryers): cooling down after drying.
  • Sud (both): too many suds; the washer works around it, but use less detergent.

Before you call for service

  1. Reset it. Samsung: turn it off for 2 to 3 minutes, back on, and restart the cycle. LG: unplug it, hold Start/Pause for 5 seconds, plug it back in.
  2. Check the hoses. Water on and taps fully open, no kinks, hot and cold on the right inlets, and the drain hose not pushed too far into the drain.
  3. Check the load. Spread it out; wash a blanket on its own on the bedding cycle.
  4. Clean the drain pump filter on a front loader, if the washer won’t drain.
