The common ones: UE means an unbalanced load, OE that the washer can’t drain, IE that it isn’t filling, LE that the motor can’t turn the drum, and dE that the door isn’t closed. CL and tCL aren’t faults: Child Lock is on, or it’s time to run Tub Clean. Many codes clear with a reset: unplug the washer, hold Start/Pause for 5 seconds, plug it back in and try again (LG).

LG gives some codes a number form too, such as E03 or E21 for OE and E02 or E10 for IE; both forms are listed. A few codes differ between LG’s front and top loaders, noted below.
What each code means and what to do
Unbalanced load
The laundry has bunched up on one side of the drum, the load is too big or too small, or the washer isn’t level. On top loaders, the washer first adds water and redistributes the load itself, which can add about 10 minutes.
- Pause, take the laundry out and spread it evenly; the washer works best about 2/3 full.
- Wash a blanket or comforter on its own, on the Bedding, Blanket or Duvet cycle.
- Don’t wash a single mesh laundry bag on its own.
- If it thumps during the spin, level the washer: rock it to find the short corner and adjust that leg.
If the code keeps coming back, LG says the washer needs service.
Not draining
The washer can’t drain the water: usually a kinked or clogged drain hose, a clogged drain pump filter (front loaders) or, in winter, a frozen drain hose.
- Check the drain hose behind the washer for kinks or clogs.
- Front loader: run Spin Only and listen for the pump humming in the first 15 seconds. If it hums, clean the drain pump filter behind the access cover at the bottom front, draining the leftover water through the small drain tube first and capping it tightly after.
- If the filter was clear, too many suds may be the cause: run Tub Clean and use less detergent.
- Top loader: lift the drain hose out of the drain and run a spin. If water flows out, the house drain is blocked, not the washer.
If the code keeps coming back, LG says the washer needs service.
Not filling
The tub didn’t fill in time: the water is off, a tap is closed, a hose is kinked or disconnected, or a hose has frozen.
- Check that the hoses are connected and both taps fully open.
- Straighten any kinked hose.
- Turn off the taps, unscrew the hose at the washer and clean the small inlet filter.
- In winter, thaw frozen taps and hoses (see FF).
Still not filling? LG says the inlet valve may be faulty and needs service.
Drum won’t turn (motor)
The motor can’t turn the drum: the load is too heavy, or a coin or other object is stuck.
- Unplug the washer for 5 minutes, then try again.
- Wash less at once; use the bedding cycle for big blankets.
- Look for coins or objects caught in the drum (on top loaders, between the wash plate and the drum) and remove them with pliers or tweezers.
If the code keeps coming back, LG says the washer needs service.
Leak (front loader) or drum can’t turn (top loader)
On LG front loaders, AE means water has leaked inside and a safety switch has stopped the washer. On top loaders, it means the gears that turn the drum can’t work, often because of an object stuck under the wash plate.
- Front loader: check the inlet hoses for loose connections or cuts, then unplug the washer for 60 seconds and restart it.
- Top loader: remove coins or objects trapped between the wash plate and the drum.
If the code keeps coming back, LG says the washer needs service.
Door not closed or not locked
dE, dE1 or E01: the door isn’t closed properly, often because laundry is caught in the gasket. dE2 or E30: it’s closed but won’t lock. dL (top loaders): the lid lock isn’t working.
- Open the door, clear anything in the way and close it firmly.
- Reset the washer: turn it off, unplug it or switch off its breaker, hold Start/Pause for 5 seconds, then restore power and try again.
- dL on a top loader: clear anything caught in the lock on the right side of the lid.
LG warns that a damp room such as a bathroom can damage the lid lock.
If the code keeps coming back, LG says the washer needs service.
Too many suds
The washer found too many suds and added a suds-removing routine, which adds about 2 hours. If it happens during the spin, it stops to prevent a leak.
- Use HE detergent and no more than the maker’s amount.
- Pods: one per load, in the drum before the laundry, never in the dispenser.
Overfilled
The tub has too much water, possibly coming in through the detergent dispenser.
- Check whether water is running in through the dispenser.
- Unplug the washer for 60 seconds, plug it back in and start a short cycle.
If the tub keeps filling to overflowing, the water level sensor may be faulty.
If the code keeps coming back, LG says the washer needs service.
Water level sensor
The pressure sensor can’t read the water level. Damp air, as in a bathroom, can cause it.
- Unplug the washer (LG says 10 seconds for front loaders, 5 minutes for top loaders), plug it back in and restart the cycle.
If the code keeps coming back, LG says the washer needs service.
Water temperature sensor
A problem with the sensor that measures the water temperature, or, on top loaders, very hot water poured straight into the tub.
- Unplug the washer for 10 seconds, then restart it.
- If you poured in hot water, unplug the washer and let the water cool first.
If it persists, LG says to close the water taps, unplug the washer and request service.
If the code keeps coming back, LG says the washer needs service.
Motor overcurrent
Too much current in the motor circuit: a short, a loose connection, a ground fault or a power surge.
- Unplug the washer for 10 seconds, plug it back in and run a cycle.
If it persists, LG says to close the water tap, unplug the washer and request service.
If the code keeps coming back, LG says the washer needs service.
Power failure
The power went off during a cycle.
- Unplug the washer or switch off its breaker, hold Start/Pause for 5 seconds, then restore power and run the cycle.
If the code keeps coming back, LG says the washer needs service.
Frozen
It’s below about 34°F (1°C) inside the washer and water in the hoses may have frozen. It won’t start until it warms above about 39°F (4°C).
- Take out the laundry, pour warm water (122 to 140°F, 50 to 60°C) into the drum and wait 1 to 2 hours.
- Front loader: drain the water through the drain tube behind the bottom access cover and recap it. Top loader: run Spin to drain it.
- Thaw taps with a hot, wet cloth for 5 minutes and inlet hoses in warm water below 122°F (50°C).
- Test with a Rinse and Spin cycle.
Never pour boiling water in. If FF shows when it isn’t cold, LG says to request service.
Vibration sensor
A contact problem or fault in the vibration sensor.
- Press Start/Pause to resume. If it returns, turn the washer off and on again.
If the code keeps coming back, LG says the washer needs service.
Heater, dryer or sensor fault
HE: a temporary heater error. dHE (washer-dryer combos): a temporary drying error. SE: a sensor error.
- Turn the washer off, unplug it for 10 seconds, restore power and restart the cycle.
If the code keeps coming back, LG says the washer needs service.
Drain motor (top loaders)
The drain motor isn’t working. In freezing weather, frozen water inside can cause it.
- Unplug the washer, plug it back in and try again.
- If it’s cold, thaw the washer (see FF).
If the code keeps coming back, LG says the washer needs service.
Time for Tub Clean
Not a fault: a reminder to run the Tub Clean cycle.
- Empty the drum, add washing machine cleaner and run Tub Clean.
- Running it monthly stops the reminder.
Child Lock on
Not a fault: Child Lock (Control Lock) is on, so the buttons don’t respond.
- With the washer on, hold the Child Lock button (on some models, two buttons together) for 3 seconds.
Detergent drawer or auto-dispenser
OPn: the detergent drawer isn’t pushed in, or was opened mid-cycle. Ed1 or Ed2: the auto-dispenser’s detergent pump isn’t pumping. Ed3: the softener pump isn’t.
- Push the drawer fully in.
- Check you’re using the right type of detergent or liquid softener, and clean residue out of the tray.
If the code keeps coming back, LG says the washer needs service.
Cool down (washer-dryers)
Not a fault: drying has finished and the washer is tumbling the load now and then for up to 4 hours to stop wrinkles.
- Take the laundry out or press Start/Pause.
The same code means something else on a Samsung
Codes aren’t shared between brands. A few that look the same mean different things:
- OE: not draining on an LG; too much water on a Samsung.
- IE: not filling on an LG; a system error on a Samsung.
- SE: a sensor error on an LG; not draining on a Samsung.
- LE: the drum can’t turn on an LG; a leak on a Samsung.
- PE: the water level sensor on an LG; the clutch on a Samsung.
Questions people ask
How do I reset an LG washer?
Turn it off, unplug it or switch off its breaker, hold Start/Pause for 5 seconds, then restore power and try again. That’s LG’s reset for door and power-failure codes; for others it says to unplug the washer for 10 seconds.
What does UE mean on an LG washer?
An unbalanced load: the laundry has bunched up on one side, the load is too big or too small, or the washer isn’t level. Spread the load out, wash blankets on their own on the bedding cycle, and level the washer (LG).
What does OE mean on an LG washer?
It can’t drain. Check the drain hose for kinks, then clean the drain pump filter on a front loader. Too many suds can cause it too (LG).
What does LE mean on an LG washer?
The motor can’t turn the drum, usually because the load is too heavy or a coin or other object is stuck. Unplug it for 5 minutes, lighten the load and look for anything caught (LG).
Why does my LG washer say CL?
Child Lock is on. Hold the Child Lock button, or the two-button combination on some models, for 3 seconds to turn it off (LG).
